For several years Rich worked as an independent engineer, working with such artists as Dolly Parton, Johnny Cash, Neil Young, Alison Krauss, Marty Stuart, Ricky Skaggs, Bela Fleck, Jerry Douglas, Sam Bush, New Grass Revival, Doc Watson, John Hartford, The Osborne Bros. (“Rocky Top”), and many others.

His home base of operations in Nashville is located on 10 wooded acres about 22 minutes from Music Row. Sound Wave studio employs both vintage and modern recording gear, analog and digital, along with an unparalled collection of microphones that Rich has been acquiring since the late 1970's.
